Evaluating the Performance of Taiwan Shipping Industry-Using Data Envelopment Analysis / 台灣航運業之經營績效評估-運用資料包絡分析法

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 103 / Because of lack of the nature resources in Taiwan, economic development and almost 95% of the international merchandise rely on seaborne shipments. Therefore, the global trade and marine transportation are highly correlated. The market structure in shipping industry is international and highly competitive. To be endurable, shipping companies have to enhance their performance and improve the inefficiency in resource allocation.
This dissertation employs DEA to evaluate 11 listed shipping companies in Taiwan with the data from 2009 to 2013, which is adopted from their financial reports. The input variables are total asset, operating cost and operating expense; the output variable is operating revenue. For the selected shipping companies, the CCR model in DEA is used to evaluate their technical efficiency and the BCC model is used to evaluate their pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. The Malmquist productive index is employed to evaluate the efficiency changes in different time periods.
