Applying DEA Cost Model to Evaluate the Efficiency of Major Global Liner Shipping Companies / 應用資料包絡分析法之成本模型評估全球主要定期航商經營效率之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 103 / Ocean transportation plays an important role in international trade. Recently, market supply of ocean transportation service is greater than demand; thus, many liner shipping companies take various strategies to deal with this high competition. This research addresses Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate operational performance of top 15 global liner companies and utilize companies’ developing situation, operation weaknesses and strengths to plan operation strategies and resource allocation. The decision making unit (DMU) of this study are top 15 liner shipping companies in the world. Employee numbers, operation expenses, vessel numbers of each levels are input indexes, and revenue is output index which have been selected for performance evaluation by using CCR, BBC and COST model in Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate operating performance of each liner company. The results of CCR and BBC indicate 9 liner shipping companies are relative efficiency among all shipping companies in 2011 and 2012 but 2012 BBC shows 10 liner shipping companies are relative efficient . However, CCR and BBC are not able to recognize costs; thus, the study uses Cost to assess cost efficiency. The results show the relative efficiency companies dropped to 4 companies in 2011 and 3 companies in 2012 while considering cost. Last, the study analyzes slack variables to propose directions and ranges for company adjustment and reference.
