A Study on the Insurance Purchase Behaviour for High Income Professionals: An Empirical Survey to Harbour Pilot / 高所得者保險商品購買意願之研究:以引水人為例

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 103 / Marine pilots in Taiwan are not cultivated from technical and vocational education systems, which results in a high entry barrier in the industry. Before participating in the national examination, a 3-year experience as a marine master in 3,000-GRT vessels is a must. Vacancies are few and independently recruited by districts for talents with eligible licenses. The implementation of compulsory pilotage brings high income to pilots because of limited marine pool. Local pilots in Taiwan international ports such as Keelung, Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung are the subjects of the research. Compared to other professionals, doctors, lawyers or accountants, pilots’ abundant revenue comes from specialized skills and even greater occupational hazard risks. Boarding accidents happen while climbing rope ladder with bare hands in poor weather conditions. Thus, best practice and risk management play important roles in marine pilotage industry.

Traditionally, losses of accident and health are compensated by purchasing commercial insurance for the economic security of the dependent family. Preferences for wealth management are increasing in recent years. A variety of financial instruments were introduced to high income individual clients. After Lehman’s bankruptcy in 2008, sales of policies with steady returns on investment and repayments at maturity like certificates of deposit are popular in the insurance market. A survey of pilots in Taiwan is undertaken to test the correlation of insurance demand with wealth management related variables. Three binary logistic regressions model specifications are tested and yield statistically significant results as predicted. The results indicate that respondents with great interest in real estates, financial information or planning on their own are less inclined to purchase insurance. Besides, the major finding of the study confirms that interest rate is the key factor in the regression equation. Interest rate has a positive relationship with pilots’ insurance procurement intention. In another word, pilots prefer to save their disposable income in bank are more inclined to have insurance purchase demand. The thesis is aimed to study the insurance purchase behavior of high income professionals. Hopefully, the findings provide a valid basis for insurance marketing, product design and service to marine specialists or other wealth management clients.
