Confronting with a main concern all over the world that human beings make more efforts to protect marine ecology, to explore, to best use and to sustainably manage marine resources, Ministry of Education in Taiwan has officially implemented marine education overall in 2011. Besides the marine lessons and activities that formal schools provide, there is another concern that non-official educational institutions can also promote and develop marine education.
This research is to study the marine education promoted by marine ecological museums (oceanariums) in Taiwan. The researcher uses the following methods to proceed with the research: 1. The interview questionnaires from the visitors of oceannariums. 2. The interview questionnaires from the staff of oceannariums. 3. The researcher’s observation in real-settings of oceannariums. The researcher collects 144 valid questionnaires out of 145 from visitors, 6 reports on observation in real-settings, 6 valid interview questionnaires from the staff of oceannariums.
According to the statistics result of all the data collected above, the researcher concludes as following:
First, The analysis performed in the One-Way ANOVA task indicates that there is a big difference (P<0.05 F=2.310) between the marine education results promoted by these six museums (oceannariums). That is to say, visitors get better understanding on marine knowledge after their visits in museums (oceannariums) and learn a new thinking on marine issues.
Second, Over 90% of interviewers enjoy their visits in the museums (oceannariums) and are willing to visit again. This finding supports that the creative activities promoted by musuems (oceannariums) are positively effective on marine education.
Third, the marine educational activities designed by these 6 museums (oceannariums) are very creative, such as demonstration area, exploration area, parents-kids area, and novelty ideas, which all contribute a lot to marine education.
Fourth, the founding principles and educational policies of these 5 museums (oceannariums) all significantly promote marine education and arrange professional staff in charge of marine education.
This research result provides the authentic information for better understanding on the marine education promoted by marine ecological museums (oceannariums) in Taiwan and thus offers references for further research in this field.
Key words: oceannarium, marine education, non-official marine education
