Study on Gender Ideology in the Textbooks of Social Studies Textbooks for Elementary Schools in the Cross-Straits between Taiwan and China / 臺海兩岸小學社會科教科書性別意識之研究-以大陸人民教育出版社和臺灣康軒版為例

碩士 / 國立臺北教育大學 / 社會與區域發展學系碩士班 / 103 / Preference for males to female is very common in traditional Chinese culture.
I- ching Xi Ci I goes: Heaven is lofty and honourable; earth is low. (Their
symbols), Qian and Kun, (with their respective meanings), were determined (in
accordance with this). Things low and high appear displayed in a similar relation.
The (upper and lower trigrams, and the relative position of individual lines, as)
noble and mean, had their places assigned accordingly. Movement and rest are the
regular qualities (of their respective subjects). Hence comes the definite distinction
(of the several lines) as the strong and the weak. The heavenly rule is Qian, and the
earthly rule is Kun, which are used to define the superiors as men and the inferiors
as women. The concept of powerful Yang and graceful Yin, superior male and
inferior female, coordination of hardness and softness, is infused from elementary
school. The influence of textbook is underlying, for every state education has a
purpose to influence the educated people through certain content. Therefore,
textbook takes an important role in a country’s education.
In mainland China, most elementary schools adopt textbook published by
People’s Education Press, while most of those in Taiwan adopt textbooks of Kang
Hsuan Publishing.
Therefore, this study compares Morality and Society textbook published by
People’s Education Press in mainland China and Society textbook published in
Taiwan, and analyze the proportion and presentation of gender ideology trough the
illustrations and structures in the textbooks.
The study of the elementary school social textbooks in the cross-straits found
that the contents are as follows:
1. The gender of the elementary textbooks content are “men are more than women”.
2. Male occupations are more diverse, and the leaders are always male.
3. The family composed of the textbooks are monotonous.
4. The gender division of labor of the content is still inflexible.
Textbooks on cross-strait issues of gender equality in education, they continue to
progress every year. I hope that in addition to the changes in the text, photograph and
caption of the textbook, it’s a long-term plan that promotion the comprehensive
gender awareness and changes.
