The Influence of Horizontal Strategic Alliance on Relational Capital and Company Performance - A Study of Transportation Industry / 水平式策略聯盟對關係資本與績效之影響 -以運輸業為例

碩士 / 國立臺北大學 / 企業管理學系 / 103 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between strategic alliance motivations (minimize cost, reduce risk, improve competitiveness and company performance), interdependence, relational capital (trust, commitment and communication) and performance in transportation industry. This study also tests if environmental uncertainty (market turbulence, competitive intensity and technological turbulence) acts as a moderator between strategic alliance motivations, interdependence and relational capital.
The study collects data by questionnaire from transportation companies in Taiwan. The total sample that we use for this study is 132. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is adopted to examine the reliability and validity of measurement. And the study uses hierarchy regression analysis to verify the hypotheses. The research results show that: (1) Improving competitiveness and company from Strategic alliance motivations has significant effect on relational capital and performance. However, reduce cost and risk does not show significant effect on relational capital and performance. (2) Interdependence has significant effect on relational capital and performance. (3) Relational capital has significant effect on performance. (4) Competitive intensity from environmental uncertainty has significant moderate effect on strategic alliance motivations and relational capital. Market and technological turbulence doesn’t show any moderate effect on strategic alliance motivations and relational capital. Moreover, environmental uncertainty doesn’t act as a moderator between interdependence and relational capital.
Based on the finding, this study suggests that: (1) Horizontal strategic alliance is a must have strategy in giant transportation industry. (2) Firm considers to choose horizontal strategic alliance partner from “resource” point of view. Moreover, firm needs to control special resource to enhance the interdenepdence among alliance partners. (3) In a horizontal strategic alliance, the alliance needs to build standard operation procedure to gain trust among all partners. (4) When firm joins horizontal strategic alliance, firm needs to establish internal trust, common goal and strength it’s capility of collecting market intelligence in order to react.
