Stop Phubbing! The Symbol Creation Reveals The Social Phenomenon in Relation to “Smartphone Addicts” Applied in Poster Design. / 低頭族社會符號現象之平面海報設計創作研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 視覺傳達設計學系 / 103 / Human society has had the rapid development in terms of science, technology and information in contemporary. From watching TV, computer, tablet PCs to smart phones, these human behaviors of communication have slightly changed to the usage of smart mobile devices which accompany around us all the time. Therefore, there is a new title called “Screen Generation” for the consumers in such a modern society. Technology brings impressive convenience, but the convenience of technology has also brought many diseases of civilization that human did not have before. This research aims to explore these kind social phenomena of overusing mobile phones. It gives the viewers to reflect on the social phenomena referred to “smartphone addicts.”
The study of qualitative research methods have been employed in the main case study. In addition, the research refers to the use of observation and participation by the researcher in the daily life to reveal the “smartphone addicts” social phenomenon. Therefore, the researcher first conducts a literature search and discussion, as well as he verifies the semiotic analysis in studying “smartphone addicts” social phenomenon. Using the results of observations, he has also applied the method of symbolic encoding into forming visual symbols dealing with those issues. Hence, there are three series of design works produced, entitled as “the development of addiction”, “lack of security” and “anti-health” in the era.
Stuart Hall (1997) proposed both negotiated and oppositional interpretations in the field of spread semiotics. The researcher has used his methodology to interpret this social phenomenon and rediscover the meanings. The researcher has found that young people generally engage in this “smartphone addicts” phenomenon in the modern society, and their ages gradually decreased. In the stage of conducting symbolic design creation, the researcher has retrieved from his personal experience to question that anyone engaged in those addictive behaviors may harm one's health. Furthermore, the researcher employs the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes to analyze symbolic significance between the denotative meaning and connotative meaning of conducting semantic interpretation in response to “smartphone addicts”.
Finally, after the establishment of the creator's encoding presented in poster design, the research invites viewers to interpret and to have feedbacks for the creation based upon three decoding approaches of forming interpretation. It emphasizes the diverse interpretation in relation to different viewer attitudes; those are the approaches, such as “dominant-hegemonic reading”, “negotiated reading” and “oppositional reading” (Hall, 1997). It has improved the effectiveness of the creation of visual symbolic design here to communicate with the viewers, and helps the researcher creator to refine his artworks that may achieve better design results.
