Applying Illusion on the Creation of Social Issues Posters / 錯視表現應用於社會議題海報之創作研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 視覺傳達設計學系 / 103 / Poster is one of the media that contains the function of ‘disseminate an ideology to public. It still possesses a certain degree of fascination in this modern society with booming technology. Moreover, it even starts to transform into a new creative media that combines arts and design. With the development of human civilization, social issues about environment and culture become more and more complicated. As a result, how to explain these questions with thinking and visual performances through posters will be a responsibility for designers.

Looking back at self-experience, not only did the pictures of ‘illusion’ touched my soul, it also inspired me to create posters about all kinds of issues. During the creating process, it is discovered that illusion pictures and social issues are similar with the special character of contradiction. If combined, it will surely attract people’s sights and deepen its thoughts, therefore brings the best benefit out of it. Recently, many international competitions of posters have started to take social issues as themes. The skill of “illusion’ used on posters also started to being noticed by world. Therefore, using the skill of illusion combined with social issues to create a new vision for posters would be an important goal for this study.

This study aims to discuss the theory of performing illusion, how it is used in the design of posters about social issues and the results of the experimental creation. Followings are the initial results: 1. Understand social issues through literature reviews and use them as the theme of posters. After doing the research, social issues are divided into nine main categories: population, family, health, education, career, payment and cost, environment, public safety and culture. 2. Discuss all kinds of theories about illusion. “Ambiguous figure” is chosen as the main performing skill. It focused on three illusion graphs like reversion, ambiguity or multi meaning, and reversion of space (contradiction space). 3. In the part of analysis about the combination of illusion and social issues, it is discovered that issues showed more common by illusion skill include: environment (40%), health (22.2%), culture, population and public safety; in education, career, payment and cost, politics are the issues less seen performed with illusion skill. Only public safety usually uses reverse illusion to perform its content. Most of the categories are showed by double image. Issues about environment use both kinds of illusion skill.
