In the past, majority of people purchase grocery in the retail store inside traditional market, and most Taiwan retail store are small scale business (Micro-enterprise). It is affected by many factors like general economy, unemployment rate and change of consumer behavior.
Under economic liberalization, privatization, globalization and the change of consumer market structure, Taiwan retail market start to growth in the 1980s. However, in order to achieve higher performance in this competitive market, business diversification becomes a trend in recent year.
Fresh food is perishable, bulkiness and the production output is easily affected by weather. Although there is import goods to regulate the supply, price are still unstable in the period of typhoon season. Taiwan is a high density country, grocer market is highly competitive. With the increasing of working women and eating out makes restaurant and hotel became an important selling channel for grocery besides traditional market, supermarket and hypermarket. In the recent year, even convenient store like 7-11 is selling grocery. It makes the competition of fresh food supply chain became complicated and unpredictable. It is no longer “from source place to retail and then to consumer”, and the fresh food supply chain plays an important role in between production and consumer. With the increasing demand for fresh food and the growth of distribute channel, cryogenic logistic became an focal point for logistic industry.
The founder of modern management, Peter Ferdinand Drucker, has also mentioned about reduce of logistic cost is the last land for enterprise to increase competitiveness. Nowadays, the competition between enterprises has become the fight between supply chains. Logistic industry has to provide more flexible, more efficiency and more quality service in order to face the challenge of change of industrial structure. It will be the key to improve service quality for our logistic service companies, if they could provide more precise operation information for cryogenic logistic to up and down stream vendor or even consumer.
This research is based on a case study of Taiwan Han Chao Logistics Co., Ltd.(瀚朝物流股份有限公司), to see how is a micro-enterprise in Huan Nan Market (環南市場) became a modernization and informatization logistic service company. To see how to make use of strength to find niche market and use correct source to create new value in the changing environment. And to understand what are the key factors for new business to survive and to develop. Summary of the research as below:
1.Huan Nan market is a closed market, the operation is very unique.
2.Entry barrier has increased with growth of economy, the change of trading pattern and the increase of operation cost.
3.With the profession knowledge of fresh food purchasing, delivering and fresh-keeping as backup, it has more advantages than other logistic competitors.
4.It is helpful for business to survive if the operator or core management team is proactive and willing to learn new knowledge.
5.Attract talented people, make good use of personal strength, implement project management and participate government guiding scheme, is helpful for increase competitive and good for enterprise development.
6.Key strategy successful when problem occurring in development stage, vertical and horizontal integration of supply chain and transform to professional fresh food deliver logistic company.
