Safe or Not Safe? Risk Perceptions and Risk Reduction Strategies toward Female Backpackers / 自助旅行安不安全? 女性自助旅行者海外旅行的風險分析以及危機處理策略

碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 休閒運動研究所 / 103 / According to Tourism Bureau, M.O.T.C Republic of China, in 2013, the number of Taiwanese male travelers to foreign countries is 5,863,157, and the number of Taiwanese female travelers to foreign countries is 5,189,751 with the percentage of 46.95. Among them, many female backpackers choose independent travel. However, without guides who are familiar with the destinations, it’s quite possible for traveler to face safety problems including crimes, diseases, car accidents, fire accidents and so on, especially for female backpackers who might encounter more risks than male backpackers. Therefore, what risks female backpackers might encounter and how to avoid them are subjects worth discussing. The study uses qualitative research method. Through in depth interviews with experienced female backpackers to discuss three dimensions; first, the crimes and accidental types that female backpackers encounter; second, understanding risk perceptions that female backpackers percepts while they are travelling; third, discussing the risk reduction strategies that female backpackers can apply during their travels. The result finds that everyone interviewee has perceived some ricks, and among them, the physical risk and property risk are the highest; the risks of planning, weather, and environment come next. All interviewees think completely prepare in advance and act and wear decently during travelling can lower the risks. Also, the backpackers can take the clothes which can keep warm and stay dry. The study hopes to provide useful advice to the female backpackers to accomplish every trip safely.
