The impact of navigation structure design on cognitive loads of elderly users: A case study of mobile application / 導覽結構設計對高齡使用者認知負荷之影響:以行動應用程式為例

碩士 / 元智大學 / 資訊傳播學系 / 103 / With the limitations of psychology and physiology, seniors often feel memory loss and anxious in their aging process. However, most of the mobile applications ignore what users need and their navigation designs are too complex for seniors to use. It is not only decreasing the motivation of use, but also causing the cognitive load and the obstacles when they are learning mobile and other new technology products. Hence, the relationships of navigation design and cognitive load are very important. In this study, we use navigation design on cognitive load for seniors as the research theme; analyze the differences between each navigation design, and make the thorough research the measure methodology and the degree of cognitive load.
This study uses a quasi-experimental research method and explores the relationships and the influences of navigation design and cognitive load with related work and data analysis. The results show that navigation design consisted of three factors, namely “hierarchy”, “relation”, and “leap”. Cognitive load included two factors, namely “subjective perception” and “task performance”. In conclusion, the navigation design of the "hierarchy" is the best structure among them. And the "relation" structure causes the highest degree of cognitive load for seniors. The "leap" structure contributes seniors back to the home page when they get lost. However, the "hierarchy" structure is the easiest navigation design to comprehend whole structure for the seniors of mobile application in the long term. We also found that the navigation design on cognitive load has the positive influence. To decrease the cognitive load, the navigation design pattern on mobile must accord with the demands of psychology and physiology for seniors. Then they can rapidly find out the information that they need and improve the user’s experience and the motivation. And finally achieve the best value of the content.
