Application of Semiotics as Means of Storytelling for Public History: A Graphic Design Project for Kinmen’s Emigration History between 1860 and 1950. / 敘事性符號於視覺傳達之表現研究 -以金門「落番」題材海報創作為例

碩士 / 輔仁大學 / 應用美術學系碩士班 / 104 / In an age when local cultural consciousness is rising, it is an important issue for citizens to understand their affection for their own land and cultural background. As an isolated offshore island, the geographical location of Kinmen has engendered its richness of culture, of which “luo fan ” is a part. “Luo fan” is a Minnan common saying, meaning “going (down) to Southeast Asia; it refers to the massive migration movement of Kinmen from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. The cultural and social changes initiated by the young and middle-aged people in these years have continued to influence Kinmen until today. Narratology and semiotics are the fundamental knowledge of design, and both are closely connected. Narrative is the method of story-telling, while symbols are the elements used to elaborate on the story; if symbols assume the important role of narration in the picture, they then are called narrative symbols. In this age of visual narrative, designers can more clearly convey their design contents to viewers if they can make good use of narrative symbols. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and investigate the way of representation for symbolic narrative that is to be used as the basis for carrying out creation.
This study adopted literature review and case studies as its research methods, and made use of the documentary analysis method to sum up the structure of narrative symbols and the theory of visual narrative to serve as the foundation for constructing its analytical method. Then, it searched for feasible story symbols and texts in the related literature on luo fan, and finally analyzed the constitution of the narrative symbols in the cases collected. The results were incorporated in its poster creation.
This study took luo fan as the theme of creation and applied the structure of symbolic narrative in the creation. It designed two series of poster, namely, “Luo Fan: A Trilogy” and “Kinmen and Luo Fan.” In the process of research and creation, this study, with respect to the narrative representation of symbols, summed up the analytical structure of symbolic narrative and the key points of its uses to serve as a reference direction in the visualization of local cultural symbols for local governments and designers in the future. In addition, through its final products of creation, it hopes it can arouse the local cultural consciousness of fellow nationals so that the goal of cultural preservation can be attained.
