The spot-faced hole is made for assembly purpose of sheet metal forming. In this paper, Taguchi method and FEM simulation were adopted to study the forming surface and hole precision of the spot-faced hole. The punch hole was assumed to be made previously and the stamping-forging operation of the hole was considered. The design factors taken into consideration were the blank material, the forming angle of punch, the friction and the forming speed. The optimum combination will be found using Taguchi method.

The CAD models of the tools and the blank were established for 2D axisymmetric FEM simulations. The L9 (34) orthogonal array of Taguchi method was adopted to arrange the combinations of the simulation cases. The surface bulging and the hole expansion amounts were calculated for the cost function index. The response chart analysis had shown the most significant design factor is the friction coefficient, the next is the blank material. The optimum combination was the friction factor 0.25, the material AISI 1015, the punch forming angle 44 degrees, and the forming speed 100 mm/second. The confirmation simulation had shown better results and confirmed the feasibility of the optimum design.
s (friction coefficient 0.25, steel AISI 1015, punch 45°and speed 100mm/sec) was selected to confirm the test, and finally through the simulation results of geometric shape and size, than the original design standards.
