A study of Taiwan fishermen’s awareness of juvenile release: a case study in Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan / 臺灣漁民對種苗放流之認知研究-以雲嘉南地區為例

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 海洋科技與事務研究所 / 104 / Taiwan's coastal fishery resources were over exploited, and its regenerate ability has been weakened. Since 2002, Taiwan Fisheries Sustainable Development Association has released dozens of species juvenile for ten million annually in recent years. However, it is difficult to assess the juvenile release effectiveness of fishermen’s livelihood. Therefore, this paper investigated fishermen’s awareness of juvenile release to assess the influence of policy on juvenile release on fishermen. In addition, this study provided suggestions for improving the juvenile release policy based on fishermen’s opinion analysis. A questionnaire survey was conducted to generalize fishermen’s views toward policy on juvenile release and the future development of recovery of fisheries resources. The results showed that juvenile release indeed increase fishing harvest and fishermen’s revenue. However, fishermen considered the government should focus on management approaches after juvenile release rather than the amount of released. Four issues for improving the juvenile release policy are recommended: (a) To plan a closed fishing area for juvenile release demonstration. (b) To guide and assist religious groups for avoiding inappropriate juvenile release events. (c) To complete the installment of voyage monitoring system of fishing vessel (d) To keep the detail information of juvenile release location and time that can prevent the juvenile from purposely catching.
