Implementation of a Simplified ROV Controlled by a Smartphone / 以智慧型手機遙控簡易水下載具之研製

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 系統及船舶機電工程學系 / 104 / The purpose in this thesis is to design and build a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) which is controlled by a smartphone. Since most ROVs are equipped with at least a waterproof video camera and lights at a higher cost, this thesis will show the process of building a partly functional do-it-yourself (DIY) ROV with its target depth of 10 meters which costs about NT$ 7600 and the total weight is less than 4 kg. In the process of DIY the vehicle, this thesis uses the advantages of PVC pipe including powerful hydrostatic pressure and low cost to construct the vehicle frame first. Then install hardware equipment on the vehicle frame to integrate them. In the end, install floating material above the vehicle to balance between weight and buoyance. According to the experience method, the vehicle in the water is neutral.
The AndroROV is a remote control ROV unit controlled by a smartphone running on an Android application. The ROV is meant to be used in observation and search missions. The AndroROV unit is developed based on the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B with an Arduino Mega 2560. The ROV is equipped with three normal dc motors of 12 V and 250 mA, a camera, a wireless USB adapter, four 3.2 V batteries, one Arduino microcontroller board and Raspberry Pi 2. The Arduino Mega 2560 controls the propulsion and behavior, while the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B processes the information received from the Android application and camera. The control commands are transmitted to the ROV unit through the Wi-Fi communication. The Android application also receives (via Wi-Fi) and displays the information from the camera in real-time. The AndroROV was characterized and examined on bench-top settings.
