The effects of astaxanthin supplementation on lipid metabolism and antioxidant capacity in health young men / 增補蝦紅素對年輕健康男性脂質代謝及抗氧化能力的影響

碩士 / 國立臺北護理健康大學 / 運動保健研究所 / 104 / Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of astaxanthin supplementation on physiological fatigue-induced abnormality of lipid metabolism and antioxidant capacity after exhausting bicycle exercise. Method: In this study, twelve moderately trained male college students (n=12; average age: 22.0 ± 1.9 yes, height: 173.7 ± 5.7 cm, weight: 77.0 ± 11.5 kg and BMI: 25.5 ± 2.7) volunteered to participate in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and cross-over clinical trial. The participants were randomly allocated into two groups: astaxanthin supplementation group and placebo-controlled group, who took astaxanthin 8 mg or placebo twice per day for five weeks during the stage one. Before or after this five weeks treatment, each participant fasted overnight and then performed a gradual incremental power bicycle exercise until exhaustion. The blood samples were collected from each participant at the indicated time points: overnight-fasting before exercise, post-exercise immediately, and 24 h post-exercise, which were determined the contents of total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides (TG), blood glucose (BS), uric acid (UA), and malondialdehyde (MDA). After the exhausting bicycle exercise of stage one, all participants were entered clearance period for five weeks, and then the members of two independent groups were cross-exchanged in the second stage. The experimental designs and procedures were similar to stage one. All data was processed and analyzed by two-way ANOVA test with repeated measures. Results: The blood levels of triglycerides (TG), blood glucose (BG), uric acid (UA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) was significantly change In the before exercise, tired out and 24 h post exercise. Notably, as a significant decrease (p < .01) of serum MDA concentration in the 24 h post exhausted exercise were observed after astaxanthin supplementation groups. Besides, there were no significant changes in other biochemical factors. Conclusion: The results from this study indicate that astaxanthin supplement significantly reduces the amount of peroxidative lipid and thus protects young healthy male from exhaustive exercise-induced oxidative stress.
