The trinsmit between Europen military wepon and Asia - In Wugongchuan (Centipede Ships) and Parahu in Ming Dynasty / 歐洲軍事武器與東亞的交流─以明代蜈蚣船及叭喇唬船為例

碩士 / 國立清華大學 / 歷史研究所 / 104 / In year 1521(明正德十六年), the first armed conflict has occurred on the southeast seas of China. In Shuyu Jhouzihlu(《殊域周咨錄》), it mentions that before this confilct, a Ming Dynasity officer Wang Hong brings back several Chinese citizen from Portugal. Learn some Portuguese military technology form them, such as Portuguese canon casting and ship building. However, it was too late to produce enough cannon or ship for the conflict in 1521. But they were ready in 1522 (嘉靖元年), the Ming Dynasity officer had enough Portuguese cannon to win this battle. In China, this kind of Portuguese cannon was called Fo-lang-chi cannon (Breech-loading swivel gun).
Although there were two different technology introduced in to China, most scholar today shows more interest on the cannon part, but the ship building. With Longjiang Chuanchang Jhih(《龍江船廠志》) and other document, it was quite easy to realize that Wugongchuan (Centipede ship) was built under the understanding of Portuguese ship building technology. But the way these document talk about Wugongchuan wasn’t enough to understand the difference between Wugongchuan and the other galley type ship in Ming Dynasity.
However, by the material and parts list in Nanchun Ji(《南船紀》), it gives us a chance to sort out the different between Wugongchuan and the origin galley type ship in Ming Dynasity. Also, by the list, we could figure out why it can’t last for long. After Wugongchuan fading out, what did Chinese Navy use to cover the area where Wugongchuan was built for.
