碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 104 / Taiwan is an island country where various raw materials and cargos must be imported from other countries. Meanwhile, most manufactures also have to be transported to the markets worldwide. Therefore, maritime transport, which can provide safe, large capacity and cheap ocean freight, has been the most important transportation mode for Taiwan. In practice, the service of maritime transport is provided by so-called carriers which are mainly composed of mainly “ocean freight forwarders (OFFs)” and “liner shipping companies (LSCs)”. There has been a delicate relationship between OFFs and LSCs, they are competitors while canvassing for cargos from shippers. However, they are sometimes partners while developing new services or approaching to a new market. Currently liner shipping is a highly competitive market, it’s important to build up a win-win and mutually beneficial relationship between OFFs and LSCs. The change of the market increased the competitiveness between OFFs and LSCs. Consequently, the ocean freight and service quality have become the factors that influence the choice of shippers while selecting carriers.
This study aims to identify the determinants that significantly influence the preference of shippers for selecting carriers. An empirical questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the stated preference from shippers in Taiwan, and then three Logit models were constructed to identify the determinants. The result of parameters calibration shows that rates, open account 30 days, number of annual shipment, experience of using transshipment and OFFs, number of containers per shipment and one stop service are determinants of selecting OFFs or LSCs for shippers.
