A Survey of Positive and Negative Affect and Human Relationships among Maritime and Aquaculture University Students in Taiwan / 海事水產科系大學生正負向情感與人際關係之調查研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 教育研究所 / 104 / This research aims to explore the positive and negative affect, the human relationships and their relationships on maritime and aquaculture university students in Taiwan. The ‘positive and negative affect’ measured by the PANAS (Watson, et al., 1988), the human relationships measured by Loneliness Scale (Russell &Cutrona) and by Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) (Helmreich & Stapp, 1974). Based on purposive sampling, there were 1098 students from 13 departments within 4 universities in this research, the response rate is 100%.
The results show: 1. the level of positive affect is higher than median (M=3.32, Likert's 5-point scale, scoring 1-5 ); the level of negative is lower than median (M=2.61, Likert 5-point scale, scoring 1-5). 2. the level of loneliness is lower than median (M=2.56, Likert 5-point scale, scoring 1-5 ); the level of social behavior is higher than median (M=3.10, Likert 5-point scale, scoring 1-5). 3. regarding to ‘positive affect’: it clearly shows the first and third year students are significantly higher than second year, the academic performance on the top 25% is significant high than the bottom 50%. 4. regarding to ‘negative affect’: it clearly shows the male is significantly higher than the female; regarding to ‘loneliness’: it clearly shows the male is significantly higher than the female and the bottom 25% is significantly higher than the top 50%; regarding to ‘social behavior’: it clearly shows the third year students are significantly higher than second year, the academic performance on the top 50% is significant high than the bottom 50% and the ‘only child’ is significantly higher than ‘not only child’. 5. it clearly shows the ‘positive affect’ has high negative correlations with ‘loneliness’ (r=-.506) and has high positive correlations with ‘social behavior’ (r=.587), the ‘negative affect’ has high positive correlations with ‘loneliness’ (r=.616) and has median negative correlations with ‘social behavior’ (r=-.327); based on the Canonical analysis, the ‘positive affect’ negatively and ‘negative affect’ positively influence (η=.74) loneliness positively and social behavior negatively with the first path, and the ‘positive affect’ and ‘negative affect’ positively influence (η=.33) loneliness and social behavior with the second path.
Hence, it is better to set up the strategies to promote ‘positive affect’ and reduce the ‘negative affect’ for promoting social behavior and diminishing the loneliness.
