A study on the happiness of seafarers / 船員幸福感之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系 / 104 / The study aims to examine the happiness of merchant ship seafarers in Taiwan. Based on a questionnaire survey, items as “family satisfaction,” “work satisfaction,” and the impact of “work-family conflict” toward happiness are discussed. The 625 subjects are including Officer and Rating, and seafarers from professional training programs of National Taiwan Ocean University. A total of 368 effective samples were collected by a questionnaire survey. Also, to explore the differences toward happiness between seafarers and the general public, another radom selective survey was conducted. The 629 subjects are from in-service employees among Keelung and other nine counties. Only 554 effective samples were collected.

The results reveal that:
1.Merchant ship seafarers and the general public share the same medium-high degree of “family satisfaction,” “work satisfaction,” and “happiness”.
2.Due to the uniqueness of merchant ship seafarers, the degree of “work-family conflict” among merchant ship seafarers goes higher than the general public. (i.e., medium-high versus medium-low)
3.Based on the model of Taiwan merchant seafarers, “family satisfaction”, “work satisfaction,” and “work-family conflict” toward “happiness” are significantly positively correlated in general while the compact of “work-family conflict” toward “family satisfaction” and “work satisfaction” are significantly negatively correlated.
4.Based on the model of the general public in Taiwan, only “family satisfaction” and “work satisfaction” toward “happiness” are significantly positively correlated while the impact of “work-family conflict” toward “family satisfaction” and “work satisfaction” are significatly negatively correlated. Nevertheless, the impact of “work-family conflict” is no significat difference.
5.Happiness mostly comes from “family satisfaction” and “work satisfaction” not only in merchant seafares but in the general public as well.

Finally, several suggestions drawn from the results for future studies, practical applications on management level and government policy to facilitate merchant seafarers’ happiness in Taiwan have been made.
