碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系 / 104 / Taiwan, R.O.C possesses worldwide influence and competitiveness in the maritime industry, due to the condition of the shipping industry’s blooming development globally, shipping companies in Taiwan have expanded their operations thus having a greater demand for recruiting seafarers then ever. However most of the new generation of maritime professional students are unwilling to work as a seafarer. The supply shortage of Taiwanese ship-officers has led the government to offer “Bachelor program of post-bachelor second major in marine service” as a back-up solution for the lack of maritime human resources.Since few studies for post-bachelor maritime students still exists, this study has construced a hypothesis model using “Social Cognitive Career Theory” as a research framework to investigate their seafaring career persistence and the applicability to the shipping industry career environment. This study also compared Post-bachelor maritime students with university maritime students to analyze the difference between seafaring career persistence factors.
The results find that “Vocational interest” and “Positive outcome expectations” had significant direct influences to the seafaring career persistence of both post-bachelor maritime students and university maritime students.Besides,“Self-efficacy” and “Social support” had significant direct influences to the seafaring career persistence of post-bachelor maritime students, while there are only indirect influences to the university maritime students. Therefore,“Negative outcome expectations” had no significant direct influences to the seafaring career persistence of both post-bachelor maritime students and university maritime students.
This study suggests government, education institutions and shipping companies to raise student’s vocational interests by funding mairtime education, providing scholarship, establishing maritime museum and propagating positive maritime images, also we should inspire students to fulfill their maritime professions while encouraging educators and the student’s families to substain their dicision of working as a seafarer in order to improve the goal of seafaring career persistence.
