A Case Study of Cost-benefit Analysis of Commercial Aquaponics in Taiwan / 臺灣魚菜共生農場成本效益分析之個案研究

碩士 / 國立臺北大學 / 自然資源與環境管理研究所在職專班 / 104 / Due to climate change, the food yield is affected around the world. In Taiwan, the farm land is limited compared with the population. Under climate change it is predicted that the extreme weather is more frequent and the water resource become scarcer, then food yield will be less stable. In recent years, farmers use aquaponics to produce both vegetables and fish at the same time. In order to understand the sustainability of commercial aquaponics farms, this study chooses three cases, which apply aquaponics, organic agriculture, and aquaculture fishery in the north of Taiwan, to undertake the cost-benefit analysis.
Agriculture and aquaculture consume much nature resource, and we try to quantify these information. In conclusion, we find that aquaponics can save water, and water pollution from aquaculture fishery may be underestimated strongly due to lack of data related to water usage and waste water discharge. The cost-benefit analysis results in this research not only help farm managers to know if aquaponics is more profitable than organic agriculture and aquaculture fishery, but also help the government to consider if aquaponics is beneficial to the society and worthy to promote. However, since applying the aquaponics practice requires new knowledge, farmers need to update and learn new technique to ensure the success of aquaponics.
