The Studies of Poster Design on Binary Opposition in Geometric Construction / 幾何平面構成之 二元對立海報創作研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 視覺傳達設計學系 / 104 / A binary opposition phenomenon is a philosophical concept. And a geometric shape is an abstract element opposite to concreteness. This study aimed to present the philosophic characteristics of binary opposition through geometric shapes, and show its opposing characteristics through contrast forms. This study attempted to design posters of related topics based on "geometric shape" elements using "binary opposition" construction. The principal adopted was to place equal emphases on both theories and practices, design and art. This study began with the design history, observed the geometric poster design styles since the 20th century, and analyzed the relationship geometric shape applications and contrast forms, as the basis for creation ideals.
The structure of poster design: geometric shapes which are purely rational were used as longitude and contrast forms of construction were used as latitude, to build a conceptual model of binary opposition. The important knowledge of ideals obtained from the review of literature related to binary opposition, construction contrast, and poster design and the analyses and discussions of the experimental creation process and the achievements are summarized below:
(1) The meaning and effect of the subject matter of binary opposition for poster design are opposing and complementing each other: For posters, the topic of “binary opposition” focuses on the symbolic meaning of the words. Two different concepts (elements) are compared with each other to achieve the thinking effect of “opposing and complementing each other” or “bring out the best in each other”.
(2) “Contrast construction” is an important form to present binary opposition. As binary opposition is to shapes, so is construction to “contrast” forms. The function of contrasts helps to compare different personalities, not only highlighting the self but also accentuate the other party’s features, thus further enhancing the overall tension.
(3) Posters constructed with “geometric elements” have the meaning of times: the evolution of modern art/ design style is from being realistic to being abstract, from being complex to being simple. Designs using geometric elements as media are more and more common. In the 21st century, because of the integration with information and technology achievements, designs using geometric elements as media can better meet the demands of that time for internationalization and symbolization.
(4) A total of 14 posters were created through the poster design creation procedure based on the requirement of content about “binary opposition”. The completed works can be divided into 5 categories according to their subject matters: strength and weakness and surplus and deficit, obedience and disobedience and advancement and retreat, truth and falseness and sharpness and bluntness, spatial order, and movement speed. The works include “Many and Few”, “Crooked and Straight”, etc. They can be used as references for the design/art related fields.
