碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 管理碩士在職專班 / 104 / Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the engines of Taiwan's economy. Approximately 96% of Taiwan’s SMEs are concentrated in the manufacturing industry. As an island country with limited demand for goods, Taiwan relies heavily on exports for its growth. Businesses operating in Taiwan could find an edge in the fiercely competitive international market when they invest resources in improving product quality. The most direct way to improve product quality is adopting a time tested quality management system. SMEs get instant credibility when they implement the internationally recognized quality standard defined by the International Standard Organization (ISO).
This research paper presents the finding that ISO is effective in improving product quality. The paper also compares and contrasts lessons learned from Taiwan SMEs and their counterpart in China in ISO system implementation. Geographic differentials, culture differences, employee qualities, and senior leadership are key factors that lead to different challenges in ISO implementation.
