Spanish Tourism from 1992 to 2014: From a “Sun, Sea and Sand” Model to a Diversified Model / 從陽光普照、藍海與白沙的模型至多元化模型之研究:以1992至2014年西班牙旅遊為例

碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 國際碩士學位學程 / 104 / Tourism is one of the most profitable sectors in Spain. Traditionally the sector accounted on average for over 10% of GDP, it contributes substantially to national employment and its importance is growing day by day. Spain was ranked as the third most visited country in the world in 2015 (UNWTO, 2015).
The purpose of this study is to analyze the evolution and reorientation of the tourism sector in Spain. It begins with an overview of the traditional tourism characteristics and the set of national-regional Tourism Plans carried out by the Spanish Government in order to boost the sector. The study focuses on a specific period of time, from 1992 to 2014, in order to find the contributing factors that have caused a rapid and unprecedented evolution.
During the second half of the 20th Century, tourists had primarily been attracted to beach destinations; however, over the considered period many efforts have been made in order to boost non-beach tourism. Today Spain offers a wide variety of forms of tourism (cultural, rural, religious, business, shopping, gastronomic, etc.) and the tourism sector has gradually experienced a reorientation process from a Traditional Tourism Model (TTM) based on the ‘Sun, Sea and Sand’ product (or ‘beach’ phenomenon) to a Diversified Tourism Model (DTT) based on quality, modernization and product segmentation. This study shows the process of that reorientation. Our main findings are: the modernization of tourism in Spain has not taken away from the traditional TM, but has actually complemented it with an heterogeneous and long-term oriented offer of products and services; tourism practices has extended to interior regions benefiting many towns and cities across the country; the sector has better adapted to the tourits demands and has become more profitable than ever before.
The research methodology used in the present study is mainly basic and applied research of secondary data (using both quantitative and qualitative sources). Regarding the structure, we have started first assessing a) the present literature on the topic, second b) reviewing the tourism policy in Spain, then c) presents the Spanish traditional tourism, followed by d) the 1990s as a turning point decade, in order to asses e) the reorientation of the Spanish tourism model, to finally f) draw some conclusions.
