碩士 / 東吳大學 / 政治學系 / 104 / The South China Sea issue has already gone beyond mere territorial dispute, it involves two great powers competing for power and more than five countries have sovereignty claims. This thesis analyzes the changes of Chinese and American South China Sea policy, and its impact on Taiwan's strategic choice. On this basis, the thesis first tries to comprehend US-China relations from the South China Sea dispute and strategic layout, and then to analyze its implications. Furthermore, the thesis studies on Taiwan’s South China Sea policy and re-examines Taiwan’s role in South China Sea dispute. Taiwan has always been a model in the South China Sea dispute, because it is moderate while maintaining its sovereignty, never taking the initiative to provoke confrontations, but Taiwan has been marginalized in the South China Sea issues in recent years. Although Taiwan’s effective management in safeguarding its sovereignty in Taiping Island international situation evolves rapidly and poses a dilemma for Taiwan. The US-China relations are the key factors influencing the strategic choice of Taiwan in the South China Sea. This thesis aims at mapping a viable strategy for Taiwan under complex international and cross-strait relations. For Taiwan, peace and stability in the South China Sea is very important, but we should seize this opportunity to rethink the national strategy and to adopt more refined strategy to cope with increasing challenges.
