碩士 / 國防大學政治作戰學院 / 政治研究所 / 104 / Examining the recent international situation, one would find South China Sea a sensitive area involving multi-national interests. The territorial sovereignty disputes, in particular, have attracted a lot of international attention recently. In addition, the fact thatSouth China Sea is now known as a place with a great amount of oil deposit and abundant marine biological resources as well as the major international marine waterways makes the sovereignty disputes even more complicated.
With the “Asia-Pacific rebalancing strategy,” the U.S. has been aggressively involved in South China Sea issues. The U. S.claims that China must respect “the right of freedom of navigation.” In May 2015, the U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Baldwin Carter also called on China to stop all land reclamation works immediately in South China Sea and the U.S. opposes any military action in this area. All claimant countries should not use military force to resolve disputes. Because of the intervention by out-region countries, the situation in the South China Sea has been worsened.
This study started with the historical approach to analyze the origin of the South China Sea sovereignty dispute, and then investigated the effect of regional security via studying all claimant countries’ sovereignty declarations, military stations and infrastructure that had changed the region’s original situation. The intervention from the United States, Japan, Australia, India and other countries has further intensified the relationship among different nations in this region. Through a thorough analysis of all these factors, we will be able to deduce the possibility of any future conflict in South China Sea.
