Assessment of Exposure to Insecticides in Home Environments – A Pilot Study / 家戶環境殺蟲劑暴露評估前導研究

碩士 / 慈濟大學 / 公共衛生學系碩士班 / 104 / Background: As usage of pesticides increases in the recent years, human exposure to pesticides becomes significant. In addition to the pathway of dietary ingestion, pesticide residues in the home environment are also an important source of exposure. The impact of long term exposure to pesticides on human health needs more research; meanwhile, the environmental distribution of pesticide residues is also not well known.
Objectives: There are three objectives in this study: 1) to establish the analytical mothod of pesticides in dust; 2) to assess the association between home environments, demographic characteristics and pesticide concentrations; 3) to assess non-dietary insecticide intake for residential young children.
Methods: We recruited subjects from participants of an ongoing study, which was to assess the health effects on new born babies’ behavioral development. A total of 41 pregnant women were enrolled in the study. We utilized two sampling methods (vaccum and surface wipe) to collect dust. Dust samples were extracted with solvents and analyzed using GC/MS. Nine commonly seen pesticides were analyzed, including Chlopyrifos, Terbufos, Permethrin, Cypermethrin, Carvofuran, Prallethrin, Tetramethirn, Cyphenothrin and Deltamethirn.
Results: The analytic results from house dust samples show that pyrethroids are the dominat compounds. The highest frequency of detects is 24% for permethrin, and the 95th percentile is 9.28 μg/g for dust in vaccum samples. The highest frequency of detects is 24% for cypermethrin, and the 95th percentile is 19.13 μg/m2 for dust in wipe samples.
Conclusion: In general, the levels of cypermethrin in this study are similar to that discovered by American surveys. The concentrations of permethrin are higher than American results. The 95th percentile and maximum of toddler’ intakes via indoor dust ingestion of insecticides are below the reference dose, suggesting minimal concern with toddler health.
