An Action Research of Cultivating Collegiate Students' Humanistic Care Attitude via International Voluntary Service / 運用海外服務增進大學生人文關懷態度之行動研究

碩士 / 慈濟大學 / 傳播學系碩士班 / 104 / This study examines the effects of overseas voluntary services to the 27 volunteers from Tzuchi University, who have received a training program plus local community service for 150 hours in Taiwan. The study also touches upon the difficulties that the researcher has encountered in recruiting volunteers, program design, empowerment strategies and community services on the one hand, and how they can be solved. The instruments include questionnaire of humanistic care attitude, semi-structure interviews, personal service journals and logs, feedback questionnaire and information documented otherwise.
The findings include: (a) By means of designing overseas service to promote citizens’ action, the program can help the collegiate students to be aware of social issues and take actions to serve the community; (b) By participating in the overseas service, college students can enhance their attitude toward human care, including “content and grateful”, “respect others and become responsible”, “courageous and temperate”, “understanding and give love to others”, and “civic literacy”; (c) The family-like bond among the volunteers helps to build intra-group cohesion and behavioral norms; (d) The college students’ knowledge of service and the sense of responsibility as international citizens can be promoted by four strategies which are “role model leaning ”, “caring those in need”, “sharing the essence of Jin-si Aphorism”, “practicing altruism”.
The author makes three suggestions for future studies: (a) The overseas service should keep going for years in order to construct a transformative peer relationship; (b) The program should put together the awareness of caring, empowering the exploration, and civic actions in the service training courses; (c) build a more comprehensive mechanism to encourage the collegiate students to participate in service associations; and (d) Examining how overseas service would promote the collegiate students’ global responsibility.
