碩士 / 東海大學 / 教育研究所 / 104 / With eleven teachers and students who had been involved in liberal arts education at Tunghai University's as subjects, through semi-structured interviews, this study used qualitative research case study to analyze the mentoring programs in Po-Ya School at Tunghai University, as well as the roles, functions, and impact of the teachers within the programs. Based on the result of this study, reflection and recommendations are made regarding the current educational environment and potential future research.

In concept, liberal arts education is based on the close interaction between teachers and students, forming a student-centric network of stable relationships, in order to provide students with a dedicated and focused learning environment. The results of the study found that: within Po-Ya School, the mentoring programs are accomplished by the combine efforts of teachers and teaching assistants alike. They all take on different roles and fulfill different functions, investing time and efforts for the benefits and growth of the students. The contributors include student's own group teachers, teachers from other groups, and school administrative staffs. All of them assist the students to set up their own social networks in a brand new learning environment. Through close interaction with their peers and teachers, students are inspired to continue their study with determination and perseverance even under pressure.

In the mentoring programs, students have constant access to and ready companionship with assigned teachers, so the teachers have a profound impact on the students. Such impact is comprehensive and layered: from learning basic social etiquette, increasing their learning skills, laying the foundation for higher learning, and the deepening of knowledge in their selected field of study. From the close interaction between teachers and students, students' resistance to stress is enhanced, they also gained a new attitude on how to handle emotional and romantic disappointments and crises. With trust and respect established in the relationship, students are then more willing to model after the teachers to become equally knowledgeable; interactions between teachers also become a model for students to emulate when they interact with their own peers. The teachers encouraged students to venture outside their comfort zone, provided them with valuable guidance, and hence influence their direction in life. These are the teachers' impact on students as a result of the mentoring programs in Po-Ya School.
