Museum is an informal educational institution; it can provide multiple learning styles and an excellent learning environment. However, if there are too many people in the museum, the visitors’ learning will be influenced by the crowding situation. In order to maintain the quality of visiting, the museum should create a standard operation procedure manual to control the number of people in the museum to reduce the risks of interference with visitors and damages to exhibits. Nevertheless, literatures on the museum visitors’ perceived crowding and coping behaviors are still scarce. Museums have insufficient evidence to create the manual. Consequently, the study utilized the “Penguin Tank” Exhibition in National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA) as a case study to understand the visitors’ expectation and perception, and explore the museum visitors’ perceived crowding and coping behaviors in different situational variables.
A judgmental and systematic sampling was adopted in the survey conducted during March to May, 2015; 591 visitors were sampled with a total of 581(98%) valid questionnaires received. Data are analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square test of independence, Pearson correlation coefficient, one-sample t-test, paired-samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, simple liner regression, multiple regression, and hierarchical regression. According to the statistics results of all the data collected above, the study concluded as following:
1. The visitors’ perception is higher than their expectation.
2. The visitors’ perceived crowding has affected their perception.
3. The visitors’ perceived crowding has significantly positive correlation with their situational variables and coping behaviors. But, the visitors’ perceived crowding is negatively correlated with their perception.
4. The visitors’ perception has significantly positive correlation with their perceived crowding and coping behaviors. But, the visitors’ perception is negatively correlated with their situational variables.
5. The visitors’ perceived crowding has no mediating effect between their expectation and perception.
6. The visitors’ perceived crowding has part mediating effect between their situational variables and perception.
7. The visitors’ coping behaviors significantly moderates the relationship between their perceived crowding and perception.
Based on the findings and the relevant literatures, the study made a crowding guideline for museum. The authors also propose some suggestions to the study in the future.
