碩士 / 國立臺南藝術大學 / 動畫藝術與影像美學研究所 / 104 / Hong Kong New Wave expanded rapidly in the late 1970s, and its subjects and forms which are different from the studio system bring a new vision to Hong Kong film industry. Ann Hui as a director of Hong Kong New Wave inherits the creation direction which focus on Hong Kong political situation with multiple perspectives to present Hong Kong social pulsation. Her films not only contain the historical even of Hong Kong and British colonization, but also accentuate her desire what she tries to detect the Hong Kong history and social transition by her films. This study not only focuses on the memories, which involve time and space crisscross and the broad historical pattern of the film, but also utilizes the research methods of Cinema and History with the ideology of film. This study attempts to review of 1950s Hong Kong leftist and rightist films, contemporary political situation, local consciousness and Hong Kong commercial film industry.
By examining the relationship of Hong Kong film between British colonization, Hong Kong-China relations and Hong Kong social movements to discuss how the director constituted historical images that can figure out her viewpoints in “Boat People” (1982), “Starry is the Night” (1988), “Song of the Exile” (1990), “Ordinary Heroes” (1999). This study try to sort out Ann Hui’s identity of author, clarified that she deliberated about the big history and shaped a political representation in her narrative film production, and further explored a research approaches to discuss Hong Kong film, Ann Hui’s film and political relations. Moreover, there is a purpose to unfold how Ann Hui concern about Hong Kong, how she turned the social changes into her film practice which represented self-awareness and the contemplation of Hong Kong.
