A Preliminary Study on Cross-Cultural Teaching Design in the Overseas Mandarin Classroom- A Case Study of Honduras / 海外華語文化教學設計初探-以宏都拉斯為例

碩士 / 臺北市立大學 / 華語文教學碩士學位學程 / 104 / In teaching Chinese culture overseas, if the content of the culture teaching is integrated with components of local culture with the goal of nourishing students' intercultural competence, then its curriculum is not only consistent with the theory of specificity, practicability, and fun, as proposed by Lee, Chuan (2006), it is also the type of teaching resource that is designed specifically to develop broader visions and improve cross cultural understanding of the students.

From the perspective of intercultural foreign language teaching that aims at cultivating students' intercultural competence, this research is conducted with a cross-cultural comparative analysis on the Mandarin teaching materials adopted by Honduran students, so as to verify the material components, which are cultural differences in nature, that affect the students' intercultural understanding. The findings may serve as a reference for designing supplemental materials of cultural content that organically combines language and culture teaching. This research provides a curriculum design that utilizes " Curriculum as Context" and "ARCS Model of Motivation" theories, while incorporating Honduran language teaching materials and intercultural competence cultivation methods. This research also offers recommendations, specifically on the cultural content design of supple- mental materials for Hondurans learning Mandarin as foreign language.

The analysis results of the existing teaching materials show that cultural difference factors affecting Honduran students in their intercultural understanding are the "language cultural factor" and the "social cultural factor". The results of the research survey show that nearly 90 percent of the research participants believe that supplemental materials of cultural content may mitigate the inadequacies of the primary materials; while there are nearly 90 percent of the participants that believe that the supplemental materials of cultural content have specificity and practicability, thus meeting the learning requirements of local Honduran students. This research also offers a comprehensive teaching guide for the supplemental materials of cultural content, with which, more beneficial discussions may be initiated. It may also serve as a reference for language teachers interested in teaching Mandarin in Honduras.
