The Rotten Tomatoes announces 100 top films in every genre for each year on the website. This study tried to define the visual tension through literature review, focus group and filtering samples under the datum: “Based on aesthetic, film posters has to make audience feel mentally fluctuant and effective”.
In the pretest, the study found out that image used on film poster is important for visual tension. However, the 4 attributes did not fulfill the samples, so, the study gathered literature about images, photography and portraits to replenish the theory. And then, the study discovered that the visual tension of images is always accompanied with sentiments, including the choice of typeface, creating an atmosphere, layouts, color images, arranging props and so on, causing to make audience feel hinted of these connotations.
Key findings included the following four: (1) the study created the frame of visual tension on film poster, including 5 attributes; (2) there is no direct correlation between film genre and visual tension, but the theme and expected ambience are key factors of influencing the poster design; (3) discovered the definitions and examples of Balance, Movement, Contrast, Color and Sentiment; (4) organized all the mental feelings of every attribute of visual tension.
However, the mental feelings of visual tension are not absolute. Creating unexpected effects could be in accordance with different design techniques. Besides, there may be other expressions on film posters from different countries. Lastly there is still much room for comparison before the feelings of posters contrast with real content.
