The effect of catalyst Al(OH)3 powders on the hydrogen generation from Al/water system / 氫氧化鋁粉催化劑對鋁水產氫系統之研究

碩士 / 中原大學 / 化學研究所 / 105 / Synthesizing Bayerite aluminum hydroxide nanopowder from aluminum nitrate and sodium hydroxide with mole ratio 1:3.5 in ice bath for 48 hour. This aluminum hydroxide is an excellent catalyst for hydrogen generation in Al/water reaction. Synthesized nano aluminum hydroxide promotes hydrogen generation rapidly up to 95 % yield without using strong base within 90 second.
Aluminum hydroxide soaking 1 hour in water before adding aluminum powder is proved to be a more effective way than those of directly mixing process. That is considered to be due to that more hydroxyl ions are generated by aluminum hydroxide’s active site. The activation energies for hydrogen generation are also calculated to demonstrate that the synthesized aluminum hydroxide do effectively decrease the activation energy in Al/water reaction. Kinetic study has shown that the activation energy is reduced from 158 kJ/mole to 76 kJ/mole.
Aluminum hydroxide is the product of Al/water reaction. In the room temperature, 1:1:200 system will produce Bayerite phase aluminum hydroxide, but in 1:5:10 rapid system, the Gibbesite/Bayerite mixed phases will be generated. The particle size of mixed phases is large more than 10 μm. Base bath will reduce the large size aluminum hydroxide particle and recover 80 % catalytic effective.
By replacing sodium hydroxide with potassium hydroxide and modifying the mole raito of synthesizing aluminum hydroxide, more effective aluminum hydroxide can be produced. In this study, the effect of different temperatures of synthesizing aluminum hydroxide is also investigated.
