A Study of Living Environment and User Activities on the Northern Waterfront of Tainan Canal / 台南運河北段沿岸日常生活環境與使用行為之探討

碩士 / 逢甲大學 / 建築所 / 105 / During the process of urban development in the northern part of Tainan Canal, there are obvious differences between the southern bank and the northern one. Because of the separation of the canal as well as different conditions, the urban context, living environment, and cultures in this region varied a lot. The southern bank (Qingping Rd.) belongs to the 5th redevelopment zone of Tainan Government, where the population density is high. Therefore, numerous noted builders, chain bookstores, and hypermarkets have been set in this region. On the other hand, the northern bank (Anping Rd.) used to be one of the most important commercial fishing ports in the past. Now, some heritages like Fort Zeelandia, Old Tait & Co. Merchant House, and Yanping Old Street have been incentives to the flourishing tourism in the northern bank. Moreover, it is also an important region for cultural inheritance in Tainan.

Due to the different conditions of the south and the north, the living environment and the user behaviors of the local residents also differ obviously. Based on these, this study aims to discuss and analyze the user behaviors and activities of both sides, and further explore the behavior spaces and activity traits.
According to the research analysis, the behavior spaces and activity traits in the south and the north differentiate greatly. Take the hinterland of the southern bank for example. The hinterland there is wider, and several parts of it even have been forested. The seats under the shade of trees, outdoor facilities for kids, and croquet courts have provided excellent activity spaces (behavior spaces) for residents to interact with each other, walk dogs, stroll, and play games (activity traits). By contrast, the north bank is a linear space, where the width of the sidewalk is just two to four meters. Without the shade of trees, the long and narrow hinterland accompanied extremely hot weather in Southern Taiwan made it hard for tourists to gather, not to mention activities of all kinds and commercial consumption. Certain commercial behaviors only occur in the afternoon, and thus form a small-scaled activity. Moreover, the northern bank is the main path to the old tribes of Anping, people usually swarm into certain well-known stores, such as Chous shrimp rolls, Elate puddings, Win-Chang beef soup and Yi-Feng white wax gourd drinks. The traffic in this region is often congested.

On the basis of different behavior spaces and activity traits (the spaces under trees, trails, and recreation facilities for kids as well as parents), this study planned proper living environment and space along the canal to serve as regulations for future landscape planning, maintenance, and references. With the hope to complete the user behaviors of the whole canal bank , the study suggested further analysis in the canal of old commercial ports and the separation of the southern part.
