In the thesis, the norms followed when categorizing punctuations are defined referring to the grammatical functions of each punctuation and the theories of cohesion and coherence. Detailed regulations for categorization are additionally set up in order to minimize room for ambiguity.
The corpus includes the source text of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway and two versions of its Chinese translation by Eileen Chang and Yang Zhao.
Basic on the corpus, the thesis came out with the numbers of the punctuations with different functions used in both Chinese and English texts, the numbers of sentences with different orders from the source text in the Chinese translations, the numbers of total sentences in three versions, and the percentage of similarity and dissimilarity between the two Chinese translations. The figures are largely in accordance with the descriptions of the author and the translators. The corpus also revealed the phenomena including incoherent sentences in translations, different translation strategies in use of the punctuations outside the comma, and using English punctuations in the Chinese text.
The thesis further investigated the translation strategies and the writing styles of the author and the translators by corpus analysis, and discovered that Eileen Chang intended to translate faithfully while her identity as an author emerged when translating long sentences. Yang Zhao changed the order of the English sentences to form a western-style Chinese. Hemingway preferred long sentences while his short segments marked off by commas were mostly for the purpose of creating a certain atmosphere in the text.
