The Industrial Transformation of an Offshore Isle Village in Penghu- A Case Study of HuJin / 澎湖離島社會的產業變遷-以虎井為例

Along the coastline, the ocean currents interchange and gather together, which has long been futile resources as well as a fishing area around the waters of Penghu. Naturally, People in this island live on the sea around. With the progress of fishery technology and equipment, the fisheries are prosperously developed and reaching its economic peak, but it also causes a greater maritime catastrophe. Eventually, the fishery harvest is not so prosperous as the past, which is the present impression of many people to the sea. Due to the reduction of marine resources and other factors, population in the fishing village is on the decrease. As a result, Penghu is turning to promote tourism, hoping that it may become another way of making a live for the fishing villages. The research method mainly uses the depth interview and the field observation to study the change of the fishing village society in the environment under the circumstance of the offshore isle of Penghu Island -HuJin. What are the roles of the fishing industry and the tourism industry played in the fishing village? Aslo, to understand the reasons causing the current dilemma from the present economic activities in HuJin, especially the changes in fishery and tourism industries. The study found that the phenomenon of early population migration is related to the imbalance between supply and demand of fishery and the industrialization of Taiwan, while the recent flow of population is related to the popularization of education. The biggest change in fishery is the development of fishing boat power supply, resulting in evolution from collective work in the past to the current single one. In tourism, early phase of the tourists visiting HuJin are largely elderly groups, who pay more attention to scenery experience and who seem easier to be satisfied, completely differing from the nowaday tourists who tend to pursue of the stories of the isle. So to create their own characteristics is the biggest issue HuJin has to be faced with.
