The study on the motive and limiting factors for people above 50 years old participating in recreational scuba diving activities—using costumers of Ming-Ja Diving as an example / 50歲以上(含)參與休閒水肺潛水動機與阻礙之研究~以名家潛水為例

碩士 / 臺北城市科技大學 / 休閒事業系碩士班 / 105 / With the full implementation of two-day weekend, the number of people participating in recreational activities will definitely increase tremendously. Both Taiwan proper and the offshore islands own rich marine resources. Among miscellaneous recreational sports, scuba diving is such an activity that brings about not only the benefits of doing exercise. . Relaxing in the borderless and weightless inner space, it also helps release one’s pressure both physically and mentally. Meanwhile, it provides the opportunity for one to explore and be in contact with various marine lives, and from which learn to protect the marine environment. Enabling the awareness of marine environmental conservation through recreation makes scuba diving a meaningful recreational activity.

This study aims to understand the motives of people 50 years old and above participating in scuba diving, and the constraints on them to participate in the activity. It is conducted mainly through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The interviewees are selected based on Purposive Sampling.

In this study, the explanations on the motives for participating in recreational scuba diving center around “the 6 aspects of holistic health”. The descriptions of the constraints for the participation in the activity are based upon the three types of leisure constraints provided by Crawford and Godbey in order to investigate and perhaps shed some light on the rationale behind the motives of and constraints on people 50 years old and above to participate in scuba diving. The difference of the motives and the constraints between male and female will also be presented.
