A Comparison Between Taiwanese and Vietnamese Traditional Holidays, Using Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival as an Example / 臺灣與越南的傳統節日之比較—以春節、端午、中秋為例

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 台灣文化研究所 / 105 / The history and background of Taiwan and Vietnam have a lot of similarities and differences. Both countries have participates in international exchanges with each other, both are Sinicized, and have been influenced by foreign cultures. . . . Therefore,the two nations’ traditional holidays have special meanings. This study will compare the similarities and differences between Taiwanese and Vietnamese Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, as well as enhance understanding of both places’ traditional culture, and promote mutual respect between Taiwan and Vietnam.
This study used books, magazines, newspapers, and literature related to Taiwanese and Vietnamese traditional holidays, as the main historical resources. I interviewed Taiwanese and Vietnamese locals about their traditional holidays’ present and past in order to remake the relevant cultural relics and information. I filmed and observed Taiwanese and Vietnamese celebratory procedures, customs in order to understand how people perceive these traditional customs.
This study has six chapters: the introduction will introduce the study’s main question and the results of past research, and clarify the range and the methods of my research. The second chapter will compare Taiwanese and Vietnamese Chinese New Year, the third will compare the two nations’ Dragon Boat Festival, the fourth will compare Mid-Autumn Festival. This study will use the traditional stories, customs, taboos, and food as the main points of comparison. The final chapter is the conclusion, a review of the study’s research results.
In conclusion, why do Taiwanese stories have a Chinese flavor? The biggest differences between Vietnamese and Taiwanese holidays lie in the two countries’ economies, their governments and their policies, the unique qualities of Taiwanese and Vietnamese people, and their lifestyles and historical backgrounds. These factors gave Taiwanese and Vietnamese Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival their unique qualities.
