碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 105 / Taiwan’s ornamental fish industry was a budding industry in 1960s slowly expanded in the 1970s as a result of Taiwan’s economic growth. In the 1980s, the ornamental fish industry experienced rapid expansion, but as the 1990s approached, due the stock market crash, the momentum of the expansion suffered severely. This caused the ornamental fish industry to go into a restructuring mode. Although in recent years, the interest in this industry has received positive attention and interest through media helped increase growth in this industry, industry growth has been short lived. Unfortunately with a dearth of market interest, any opportunity for development in the industry evaporated quickly.
Currently in Taiwan amongst all different business types, recreational enjoyment of the ornamental fish industry has not become an independent industry. The domestic market for this industry has recently slowly received gradual interest and recognition. Majority of the interest and discussion in this industry is spread out between the different kind of business or different type of operations individually. Rarely it’s gathered into a cohesive discussion or under one industry. Taiwan’s domestic ornamental fish industry in addition to international competition and business practices, and domestic industry business practices, resulting in non-standardized rules and practices within different parts of the industry. This has caused growth in the Taiwan ornamental fish industry to plateau.
The enjoyment of ornamental fish is an expensive hobby, the products in this industry have high prices due to demand, causing it to be heavily linked to the current economic climate. Previously, profitability in this industry was mainly derived from the huge lack of knowledge and information on the part of the consumer, thus allowing businesses to set widely varying prices and be highly profitable. Currently, with technological advances and the ease of internet for information on pricing, prior advantages do not exist anymore. My research goal is to put together a cohesive, independent business model for this industry through compiling written data, interviews, in person observation, and surveys. My work consists of a comprehensive plan which includes production and selling models, business operation strategies, methods to increase competitive advantages, and the development of the industry.
