碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 書畫系造形藝術碩士班 / 105 / 《The Ten Play of Li Yu》, also known as《The Ten dramas of Li Yu》, is a collection of traditional Chinese dramas written by Li Yu, which includes the《Lian siang bang》play, the《Feng zheng wu》play, the《Shen zhong lou》play, the《Yi zhong yuan》play, the《Huang qiu feng》play, the《Nai he tian》play, the《Bi mu yu》play, the《Yu sao tou》play, the《Qiao tuan yuan》play, as well as the《Shen luan jiao》play. These drama plays were originally published individually as the “single volume editions” and subsequently published as the “collected edition”, which ultimately became the 《The Ten Plays of Li Yu》 collection.This paper begins with descriptions of life stories of the author Li Yu, as well as his social life experience during authoring of the ten plays. And then the paper explores the edition evolutions of various existing《The Ten Plays of Li Yu》 versions and the reasons behind the edition changes.The unique creative approach of Li Yu was reflected in the character (role) designs and plot settings of 《The Ten Plays of Li Yu》. The inspirations of stories in his ten plays came from ideas across different time of history. While covering the current events at the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, those plays delicately projected Li Yu’s personal perspectives and views and mirrored the social phenomenon at the time. This paper will further delve into those topics.
From the time that first 《Lian siang bang》play of 《The Ten Plays of Li Yu》 was published, to completion of the tenth play 《Qiao tuan yuan》, it took as long as 18 years. There are up to 72 of illustrations in those plays. During the authoring of 《The Ten Plays of Li Yu》, Li Yu’s relocation events, personal networking, the combinations of different illustrators and engraving craftsmen,as well as the trends of wood block print patterns, are the major factors contributed to the difference and variations of illustration styles, and those factors are also the ultimate focuses of this paper.
Through the collection and compilation of literature and image comparisons, this paper will clarify on those topics in details and explain the research conclusions in each chapter.
