碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 圖文傳播藝術學系 / 105 / This thesis is conceived as an effort to create new values out of the Tao culture by way of tableware design. The author of this research, which starts with literature review, before sorting out the tribe’s spiritual significance and semiotic features via the analysis of varying types of Tao lore. In addition, a mode in which aboriginal elements are integrated into cultural products is established through the inspection of existing designs, while cultural materials and design elements are also collected from the author’s field research and interviews with local Tao people. Combined with further text analyses, the aforementioned results contribute to the emergence of six main aspects, which are conceived from and closely connected with the spiritual significance of Tao flying fish myths. The author subsequently injects fish, which hold an important role in the Tao people’s diet, into the design mode of cultural products and creates the samples of two tableware sets, i.e., the “Rewarding Journey” fish dishes as well as the “Island of Human” cutlery set. In order to evaluate the precision with which the tableware embodies the Tao’s six spiritual aspects and examine the difference between the two sets, the author designs a Likert scale questionnaire, where 36 adjectives are provided for 50 respondents to choose from, based on five principles: cultural value, design value, product image, economic value, and consumer behavior. The results, which are confirmed to be at once reliable and valid through statistical analyses, show that the “Rewarding Journey” fish dishes garner a mean of 4.64 points in representing cultural values, while the mean of the “Island of Human” cutlery set is as high as 4.72 as to whether it fits the imagery of flying fish myths. In addition, a semantic differential analysis indicates that out of the 36 adjectives, 34 are in accordance with the ones that the author has previously listed, which highlights how accurately the two sets of products deliver the significance of Tao culture and myths. In conclusion, the author employs a number of Tao elements in the design of the two tableware sets, which embody the myths and the cultural features of the Tao people. This study, therefore, is an example of the exploration of cultural elements, where an approach to the design of Tao cultural products is provided.
