A Study on Shanghai Museum Bamboo Slips (vol.9)of “Chengongzhibing” / 《上海博物館藏戰國楚竹書(九)‧陳公治兵》研究

In the content of “Chengongzhibing” (陳公治兵), governing soldiers, military etiquette, the history of Chu State’s (楚國) battles, and the strategies of military array are included. On the words, it contains lots of Chu State’s text fonts that appeared in the first time. In research methods, the author considers about the words’ shape, sound, and meaning to do the research and also does interpretation of the classics as well as collates the unearthed literature; moreover, the various statements are collected in the thesis and the author chooses the most appropriate interpretation or adopts the other statement. There are about more than one hundred words’ interpretation from bamboo slips. The thesis discusses about the form, order, and words’ interpretation of bamboo slips; furthermore, the author tries to give the difficult words new interpretation.

INTRODUCTION
“Shang-hai-bow-u-guan-tzang-jan-guo-chu-ju-shu” (上海博物館藏戰國楚竹書) Vol.9 was published in Dec, 2012, and “Chengongzhibing” was the second unearthed chapter that announced from the book. The content of “Chengongzhibing” is abundant, and it could divided into four major aspects: 1. Depicting Cheng Gong’s governing towards soldiers 2. Presenting the military etiquette in the military activities and the correspondence between the instrument and the conductor 3. Recording the victory in the history of Chu State by time 4. Adopting what kinds of method and array to face different situations of the enemy troop and terrain. On words, there are many the first appeared words that need to judge what word it is. In the process of research, the author collects various interpretation from scholars and check their rationality as well as check their correctness by the ancient classics and military books. Moreover, the author also takes the words’ shape, sound, and meaning into consideration to presume the possibilities of the word’s development. Eventually, the author would choose the most appropriate statement to interpret the words and supply relevant information or give the word a new statement under different circumstances. There are lots of places and names that hard to be verified which expected to be answered in the future after the emergence of the new unearthed materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
The thesis collects various statements related to “Chengongzhibing” from scholars, such as single academic papers, forum published papers, and degree dissertations. Based on these statements, the author research the words by ancient classics and unearthed materials. Besides to study the words from their shapes, sounds, and meanings, the author derives the development of glyph by various aspects such as geography and history. Moreover, the author also considers about whether the word meets Chu State’s word feature or not. On the word meaning, the author presume the possible meaning by customary word using example and the context of the text. On word’s sound, the author would judge whether the word is interchangeable character or not by the phonological relationship.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
To the research results, the thesis discusses about the bamboo slips’ system, arrange, interpretation, and etc. To avoid the bamboo slips become shrinking, different slips are protected by vacuum, freeze, dry, and dehydrate. On the word arrange, there are three things that scholars have different arguments that the continuation behind Bamboo slip 1, the arrangement of battle history, and the order of the last three slips. According to the correspondence of the slips’ content, the slip 6 follows after the slip 1. The order of the battle history is ‘slip 2+3+4 front section’. There are two possible arrange ways of the last three slips that ‘slip 18+19+20’ and ‘slip 19+18+20’. However, the bamboo slips are too broken to accurate. The thesis focuses on the interpretation of the words, and divides into five chapters by the content of bamboo slips. The author collects the various statements and study the words by their shapes, sounds, and meanings as well as other related research sources to interpret the text.
CONCLUSION
The thesis collects the present related research sources of “Chengongzhibing”, and discusses the problems that the former scholars put forward. The author also tries to clarify all the hard words in the text. The text has lots of content that hard to verify such as Chu State’s history and military strategies; however, the author searches the ancient classics especially the category of military to find out the possible interpretation. The thesis researches more than one hundred words, and complement the other scholars’ statements or supply the new interpretation. There are so many names of locations and people that could not find out in the present record of the history, so it needs to be clarified in the later future. The author expects the thesis could achieve a comprehensive discuss towards “Chengongzhibing”, and gives some references towards the academia by the the author’s discuss of Chu State’s history and military strategies.
