Key Factors Contributing to Working Stress of Master Mariners on Container Vessels / 貨櫃船船長工作壓力之關鍵影響因素分析

碩士 / 國立交通大學 / 管理學院運輸物流學程 / 106 / Maritime shipping is one of the most important transportation modes in the international trade. Merchant ships carry more than two-thirds of the world’s commodities. Nowadays, the introduction of mega-ships shows the tendency of seeking better economical scale and more efficient operation. Among these newly built mega-ships, a large number of them operate as containerized vessels. To ensure that every aspect of safety on ships, crewmembers and cargoes has been looked after, the master of the container ship is given a heavy burden. In consideration of special working environment, work on both navigation and cargo operation, the job for the master is running non-stop. Up until now, there is little study on how much pressure mentally and physically has been put on these hard-working container ship masters.
Based on the framework of Stress Paradigm Mode, this study aims to examine the working stress of the container ship masters by means of the Occupational Stress Indicators(OSI-2). Key factors contributing to the master’s working stress are determined through the process of structural equation modeling.
The stressors mainly came from taking master’s duty seriously, keeping the standard of bridge resource management and acting the role of being the manager onboard. In fact, all sources of stress indicate the main cause is the concern for navigation safety. The responses in stressor shows that the lower perceive in stressor who is the better in their well-being; In respect of the satisfaction in their job is higher. The finding suggests a reduction in working stress by controlling key factors, ship safety management and maritime safety at sea can be improved.
