碩士 / 國立嘉義大學 / 視覺藝術學系研究所 / 106 / In recent years, the subject matter pertaining to mermaid has emerged in many visual - audio works in addition to related products, activities, ...etc. However, most people are not to familiar with the development and context of the mermaid images, though they know well the forms of their images, especially those in Andersen's Fairy Tales — The Little Mermaid and Disney's Full-Length Animated Classic — The Little Mermaid, which are influential in promoting mermaid images. The objectives include: (a) to explore the development of mermaid images in Eastern and Western cultures; (b) to interpret the images and meanings of mermaid in Eastern and Western visual cultures; and (c) to illustrate the application of mermaid image in visual culture. The methods of literature analysis and art criticism are adopted in this study. Firstly, the literature is analyzed and classified into Eastern and Western categories. Hence, the similarities and differences of mermaid images in Eastern and Western cultural context are classified. Because the understanding of images from the literature requires the analysis and interpretation, this study utilizes the FTCF(Form/Theme/Content/Function) integrated mode of art criticism. It is discovered that these are many differences between the images and symbols from both cultures in initial stages. This means that the images described in Eastern literature are more multiple, but those in Eastern visual culture seldom appear. In symbolic meaning, the Western images have more multiple content, which includes wisdom to temptation, death to naive, goodness, and courage, aspects. Become the context and symbolic meaning of Western mermaid images are more abundant, those images are more widely applied in visual culture. In current highly developed technique oriented and the frequently interactive society, the mermaid images are often represented as Western beautiful female figure with human and fish combined. In recent years, the role of mermaid images has been integrated with the issue of ecology and environmental protection or reservation. This provides mermaid with new role and meaning, however, the less used Eastern mermaid images can perhaps be more utilized in the future.
