碩士 / 國立東華大學 / 藝術與設計學系 / 106 / With the advancement of science and technology, animation has become a branch of life in the field of visual communication design. It is an entertainment that is easy to access to all ages. Recently, the animation industry has developed rapidly with the advancement of science and technology, and it’s also extremely ingenious in stories, character settings, and scenes. However, a highly commercial and intriguing animation requires considerable cultural connotation and arrangement. In 2016, Makoto Shinkai's animation – “ Your name. ” Not only received a lot of feedback, but also won many international awards. How does Makoto Shinkai make strategic expressions to the enjoyment of all audiovisual people and enable them to gradually understand the ideas he wants to convey and resonate with them?

In this study, we use Makoto Shinkai's four fantasy-type animation works as research samples in an attempt to analyze animated thematic implications, story subtopics, and visual representations of Makoto Shinkai in a narrative design theory, supplemented by an analysis of the design of cultural code theory. We analyze the strategic level, meaning level and technical level to find the application of code symbol in Makoto Shinkai’s animation. The purpose is to examine the strategic arrangement of Makoto Shinkai’s fantasy type animation and the application of symbol elements, to find out that it can resonate with the audience and obtain the majority of the reason for favor. Finally, results from analysis are summarized to provide reference for follow-up researchers. There are consisted of two parts in the main research results as following:

1. Construct the animation pattern analysis diagram in combination with design cultural symbol theory and narrative design theory. According to the animation pattern analysis diagram, enerating strategic level of story is defined by thematic that can be easily understand about
- Context of the animation
- How to convey the artistic conception and arrange the element of the story. Nevertheless, we can expand the level in subtopic of story in order to express how to show the story clearly, and to obtain audience's resonance. Finally, we explore the technical level by the visual interpreting to show how to attract more audience by presenting animation visual, time planning, narrative perspective, lens arrangement and color performance.

2. It is easy to find out similarities and differences in Makoto Shinkai’s fantasy type of animation, "The voices of a distant star", "The place promised in our early days", "Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below" and "Your name." . We can understand the narrative context and application of cultural code by the analysis of themes, pictures and atmosphere. According to the study, (1) There are three common elements in the subject aspect of Makoto Shinkai’s fantasy type animation, which are the time of dusk, the most wanted thing, and lost. (2) In the picture presentation, audiences have feeling of beauty and loneliness towards the empty scenery and the beautiful light of Makoto Shinkai’s animation. There are a lot of empty scenes and distant scenes in the animation. Makoto Shinkai makes up for shortcomings of people's design by the sky and small objects that are good at depicting, but this treatment is easy to cause the splitting of the picture and dialogue, which increases difficulty for the viewer to understand. (3) With aspect of the atmosphere, there are the sense of helplessness and loneliness caused by distance between time and space, which makes people born with loneliness in the four animations above. In order to present the feeling of loneliness, Makoto Shinkai has given the protagonists the life they want, but they cannot realize in the life. Therefore, they pursue their dreams but live in a lost world. In that case, Makoto Shinkai use this mode that people yearn to get what they want but they couldn't do it to highlight the feeling of loneliness.
