A Case Study of Contextualization of Jiao Illustrated by Chuan-Jia-Bao Jiao Workshop in Chiayi County / 珓杯的脈絡性轉換研究:以嘉義縣六腳鄉船嘉寶神筊工作室為例

Jiao was called by different names, presented in different forms, used for different purposes, and bestowed different symbolic meanings in different eras and areas in its long history. The major cause for this might be the repeating contextualization and recontextualization during the passing of culture for the written texts to comply with contemporary and local situations. To illustrate this phenomenon, we take the bamboo Jiao made by Chuan-Jia-Bao Workshop for a case study to discuss the contextualization going on in Taiwan.

A review and analysis of related documents shows that the very first written record of Jiao appeared in Jing Chu Years written by Zong Lin of the Liang Dynasty in the Six Dynasties. In this book Jiao was called “教” (sounded as Jiao) and used to divine the harvest. We can neither prove that the “教” in Jing Chu Years was the earliest type of Jiao nor classify “教” and its function described in Jing Chu Years as the primary contextualization defined by Bernstein. However, according to Bernstein’s definition, Jiao should be a restricted code given the fact that there was not an agreed word of Jiao so it had to be written as another word and the fact that it was still a rustic way to divine. Being spread and reproduced, Jiao showed its context again and became a divination tool of Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty. The word “珓” was created for it. Mentioned and described in poems and proses, Jiao became an elaborated code to pass culture. Contextualization and recontextualization are shown in the discussion over how the name of Jiao was formed, how Jiao spread, and how the form and material of Jiao developed.

Not only is Bamboo Jiao made by Chuan-Jia-Bao different from traditional wooden Jiao in terms of appearance and material but it also has new functions and symbolic meanings which manifest new cultural context. It symbolizes the prayer for happiness, the dispelling of evil, the invitation of marriage and siblings, and the bringing of fortune. As far as its functions are concerned, bamboo Jiao now serves as art pieces for display as well as divination and ceremony tools. Therefore, decontextualization and recontextualization can be found in the development of bamboo Jiao made by Chuan-Jia-Bao. This phenomenon is actually a renovation of cultural merchandise. The price of bamboo Jiao rises significantly. With its sale and popularity grows, bamboo Jiao gradually appears in temples around Taiwan and affects the marketing of wooden Jiao.
