A Study and Analysis of Myanmar’s Swine Farming Industry in Terms of its Market Developmental Trend and Investment Conditions / 緬甸豬畜養殖產業的發展趨勢與投資環境之探討與分析

碩士 / 國立臺北商業大學 / 高階國際商業創新經營管理碩士在職專班 / 106 / The swine farming industry in Taiwan is among the top in comparison to similarly developed countries in the world, considering different aspects such as farming technology and skills, species modification, equipment investment and environmental protection awareness. Among all the aspects, feed R&D has been one of the main focus of this industry as professionals continue to increase Feed Conversion Rate (FCR) as well as the immune system of the swine itself. However, as the industry was on an exponential rise, in 1997, a deadly Foot-and-Mouth Disease broke out, leading to the inability to export and the entire industry sank into a low ebb.
Taiwan joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2002 and opened its doors to the importation of pork, which made it even harder for recovering local farmers who ran the swine farming business on high cost. Nevertheless, as the World Trade Organization and Agricultural Units joint forces to lay out strict regulations that controlled quality at all stages, renowned ones such as the Certified Agriculture Standard (CAS), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), local farmers were once again producing high quality pork and consumers started believing in local farming again; which is more than essential for an industry to grow sustainably.
In August of 2008, Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture officially announced the removal of Taiwan from the world’s list of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Infected Areas. This not only restored Taiwan’s ability to export pork but also to reestablish this industry back to its glory days. Apart from the advancement of traditional management, there are also major improvements in technological R&D, equipment innovation and feed R&D. Influences into the mass market as well as investments abroad all bring new direction to this industry as more opportunities arise.
Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is an undeveloped country with its people having deep roots in Buddhism. Due to the gradual opening of its doors to the outside world, international conglomerates and SMEs of all industries pour into this country, wanting to grasp at the vast opportunities. Although general infrastructure is incomplete, advantages such as the vast untouched land, abundance of agricultural and fishing resources, the increasing demand of pork (especially a shortage of supply for the high demand of protein meats) and low wages for manpower all support the investment of swine farming in this country. Taking on Taiwan’s previous rollercoaster ride in this industry and assessing all the advantages and disadvantages, I will investigate and analyze the swine farming industry for Myanmar’s market as I mainly focus on the environmental conditions, farming conditions, livestock business conditions, regulations & policies on livestock farming and the future developments and sustainability of swine farming in this country.
