The Design and Development of Safe Navigation System for Dementia Patients based on Mobile Devices / 基於行動裝置之失智症患者 安全導航系統設計與開發

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 電機工程學系碩博士班 / 106 / In recent years, aging population grows fast in Taiwan, and the life expectancy of the whole world population will increase over time due to the medical progress. Therefore, how to provide better treatment and prevent diseases for seniors and elderly patients via integrating technologies and medical services is an important research issue. In this thesis, we propose a navigation service for sporadic or early stage dementia patients. Once a patient’s dementia symptoms are detected, our system will calculate a safe and highly familiar route for the patient and then navigate him or her to the safe area. Our proposed system tracks a user’s moving trajectory and records the familiarity of different roads and areas, and then updates familiarity weight of these roads according to the usage frequency and moving trajectory. Through the process, we can easily understand the user’s familiarity of different areas, roads, and spots. Integrating with dedicated wearable devices, once the device detecting the patient’s dementia symptoms, the smartphone will navigate the patient to the safe and familiar area with his or her highest familiar route which is calculated by our proposed algorithm. Therefore, our proposed system can ease the dementia symptoms of the patient and reduce the lost problem. In addition, we can help to notice the patient’s dementia symptoms in the early stage. Real prototyping experience and experimental results are also shown in the thesis. In the future, we plan to integrate our system with the rescue service. If the patient doesn’t follow the navigation route after our system detecting his or her dementia symptoms, rescue service will push notification messages to the nearby friends, family, and/or rescue team to look for the patient and help him/her to go back to the familiar area. Thus, the patient’s family and/or relatives can take good care of him or her and relieve the symptoms.
